PRIMARY SCHOOLS POETRY COMPETITION 2017

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS COMPETITION IS CONFINED TO PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN NORTH TIPPERARY.

Acclaimed poet and author  Geraldine Mitchell judged the Schools' Competition for the first time last year and was hugely impressed by the high standard of entries submitted by the school children. Geraldine says she is looking forward to judging the poems again this year.

Winners will be contacted through their schools and invited to attend the prize giving ceremony at Lough Derg Yacht Club, Dromineer, Co. Tipperary, Saturday afternoon October 7 at 2.30pm

At this event Ms Mitchell will announce the recipients of the awards and, before reading the winning poems, will tell the audience why she has chosen them.  This is one of the most delightful parts of the annual Dromineer Literary Festival celebrations.

The school children, their family and teachers are welcome to attend this event.  (Following the children's award ceremony, there will be a brief interval, when parents can take their children downstairs for refreshments. The adult's competition awards will then begin.)

The theme for this year’s children’s competition is Water

Geraldine has offered the following prompt to get the children going on their poem:

"Deep as Lough Derg or shallow as a puddle, we swim in it, splash in it and are almost totally made up of it. Some people get too much of it and others die for want of it, but we can't do without it."

Entry is free.  There are two categories:
1. 3rd and 4th Class
2. 5th and 6th Class

Prizes for both competitions are book tokens sponsored by The Book Shop, Nenagh: 1st Prize €20, 2nd Prize €15, 3rd Prize €10.

Warm thanks to DLF committee member Margaret Folan, who co-ordinates the Schools Competition and will be in contact with local schools with all details of the competition.
