PRIMARY SCHOOLS POETRY COMPETITION 2018

ENTRIES FOR THE 2018 COMPETITION ARE NOW CLOSED

PARTICIPATION IS LIMITED TO PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN NORTH TIPPERARY - LOOK OUT FOR THE CHANCE TO TAKE PART IN 2019.

Acclaimed poet and author Geraldine Mitchell has judged the Schools' Competition several times and has been  hugely impressed by the high standard of entries submitted by the participating children. Geraldine says she is looking forward to judging the poems again this year.

Winners will be contacted through their schools and invited to attend the prize giving ceremony at Lough Derg Yacht Club, Dromineer, Co. Tipperary, Saturday afternoon October 6 at 2.30pm

At this event Ms Mitchell will announce the recipients of the awards and, before reading the winning poems, will tell the audience why she has chosen them.  This is one of the most delightful parts of the annual Dromineer Literary Festival celebrations.

The school children, their family and teachers are welcome to attend this event.  (Following the children's award ceremony, there will be a brief interval, when parents can take their children downstairs for refreshments. The Festival Launching Party will then begin, at 3.45pm.)

The theme for the 2018 competition was Wild Wonders and Imagined Worlds.

Participating schools that took part were given the following prompt:

Let your imagination take you on a journey, maybe it’s to somewhere you have already been, or somewhere you just dream about. Most likely it doesn’t even exist. Have fun with words; make it real, full of smells and sounds and tastes and things to see. Try to share the magic of your flight of fancy. Take us with you. Most of all: have fun with words!

Entry is free.  There are two categories:
1. 3rd and 4th Class
2. 5th and 6th Class

Prizes for both competitions are book tokens sponsored by The Book Shop, Nenagh: 1st Prize €20, 2nd Prize €15, 3rd Prize €10.

Warm thanks to DLF committee member Margaret Folan, who co-ordinates the Schools Competition and will be in contact with local schools with all details of the competition.
